Chapter 2 TRAIN and 4th semester photography |
This week I bought a new book called Bangkok Bound by Ellen Boccuzzi. It is the first book to examine rural-urban Thai migrant literature and I felt it could give me a valuable reference as well as inspiration. I have read about half of the book so far and it is definitely worth reading. Chapter 1 was noting similar issues as in my project; migrants are being forgotten because the subject is so "old" although the concern is still very much valid.
Chapter 2 is relevant with my photography throughout the project and made me think if trains and buses as symbols of transition and vessels of migration should have much more recognized meaning and important part in my visual work. It is notable how I have kept capturing them all of the time of this project and made visual studies in airport, train-station and bus-terminals without really being able to make this connection with my project before, but felt something was there.
I have also been writing the Introduction for my Thesis book. I have been working around this project for months and months now and it still feels difficult to put in words what it is that I am actually doing. It feels also a little intimidating that now is the time to really set the paragraphs that my entire writing refers to. Practice Based research tends to change as it goes on but now is the time to set limits and make final decisions. Friday I had a "coffee shop working revolution" after writing various mind-map-free-writing-sketches to clarify my own thinking and now I believe I finally know what it is I'm writing about.
Here is the first chapter as I see it now
" Invisible Fortunes - a practice based exploration on Thai migrant women workers IS a study into ways that rural-urban migrant women are seen inside today's Thai society. In particular it examines the attitudes and other factors behind these women (in)visibility. "
For next week I am planning to finish the introduction and some parts of contextual review C2 in my writing. I will also read the Book Bangkok Bound to the finish and continue making notes about it. I might follow the idea about taking trains and buses and the transition from rural to urban as a part of my visual work.
