I am very pleased to announce that the first MfA Visual Communication International Seminar of 2015 will be led by the leading US artist and theorist Joseph Nechvatal. As always, all MfA students and alumni are invited to take part in what should be a fascinating session. Please let me know asap if you plan to attend. I will announce the venue sometime next week.

Immersion into Noise
The Immersion Into
Noise seminar with
Joseph Nechvatal will focus on the
history of the art of noise and its
present aesthetic manifestations
in both the audio and visual fields. Dr. Nechvatal has extensively researched the topic of
artistic noise for his book Immersion
Into Noise. After recapping the essence of the book, and demonstrating some
practical use of ideas, he will discuss the issue with the students and
attempt to situate them somewhere between the facade of empirical reality and
the chasm of shattering incoherence where they must each pick through aesthetic
noise meshwork and recover figurative meaning out of entangled ground. This
approach directly relates to Dr. Nechvatal’s artistic activity where
figure/ground merge and flip the common emphasis to some extent.
His book Immersion Into Noise has been open-source published by the Open Humanities Press in
conjunction with the University of Michigan Library in 2011.
Students should
download it for free as a PDF e-book here:

and read the Preface, Introduction,
and Conclusion.
