Completed inquiries: Pimchanok Tragoolsilp 2014

Khian Rhoop by Pimchanok Tragoolsilp (Thailand) 2014

Khian Rhoop explored aspects of the relationship between the body and writing. In particular, my inquiry addressed three issues: 1) the ways in which the human body shows up in everyday language through metaphor, metonymy and other forms of linguistic figure; 2) the ways in which these might be explored visually through various media and forms; and 3) the role of the body as a producer of linguistic expression through performance and gesture. The project began from a series of investigations in everyday Thai language and Thai cultural perspectives of body as these are reflected in language. From there, the inquiry began to address the broader questions of philosophical dualism that characterizes Western understandings of the body and writing and the difference between these and Eastern notions. The project methodology integrated a number of approaches, primarily, material exploration in the fine arts tradition, practice-based approaches to inquiry through reflection-making cycles, and theoretical and philosophical contextualization. Specifically, the inquiry took the form of a series of creative experiments involving illustration, typography, interpretive and reflective writing and drawing. The project culminated in a ten-minute video essay/ installation that explored performance as a means of reconnecting language and the body through writing.
