References - something new, something old something borrowed
This week I was sick for couple of days and didn't get to work on visual materials just yet, mearly did few sketches. Most of my time I spent searching information on my references and writing. This week I have been writing the Contextual review for Thesis book and focusing on the practitioners who inspire my work.
Here is a preview about 3 of them who have inspired my visual work and/or had similar interests and concerns.
ARAYA RASDJARMREARNSOOK –Two
Planets, Gender and Marginality
Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook is probably the most recognized
Thai female artist both nationally and internationally. Her work has been
focusing on femininity, sexuality, publicity, loss, death, relationships
between humans and animals, living and death and cultural differences. She has exhibited widely in Asia, Europe and the
U.S. She is also a professor at Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. As
an Artist, intellectual and a writer she has continuously -and at times, controversially
aimed to sustain public discussion on gender, sexuality and affects around loss
in Thailand.
Araya's works from Thai Trends Gender and Marginality exhibition 2012 and pictures of video's from Two Planets 2008, Village and Elsewhere 2011
CHRISTIAN PHONGPHIT –
abstract paintings? Surfaces of the City
“Curious,
seemingly insignificant detailing of the metropolitan sprawl is typically
ignored by the average urban dweller. But for Bangkok-based Germans landscape
architect, artist and conceptual photographer Christian Phongphit, it is the
random textures and patterns peppering vernacular objects and structures that
turn the city into a living gallery.
Inspired
by the weathered roofs of Bangkok buses, Phongphit photographs the paint
cracked surfaces by standing atop pedestrian bridges. Mundane and unseen, the
bus detailing is blown up and printed across canvases manifesting as an
abstract painting.” - Steven Pettifor, BAM - Bangkok Art Map, April
2008

GUY
DENNING
Guy Denning is a Bristol born artist, who now
resides in Finistere, France. He has
displayed his work in selected solo shows, both in the UK and the US. His work
has also been featured at numerous group shows, displaying his intricate skill
in immersing distinct visual emotion, work that one finds hard to draw their
eyes away. Denning‘s interest in sociology and philosophy plays a big part in
his artistic expression. He also displays his interest in feminine studies and
surrealism while taking an acute curiosity in writings and literal opinions. (By Samar Sadullah for Tall Dark Roast)
Guy Denning Dependence 2012 and Fucked-up celebrity portrait number 1' Drunk on Me 2008
For next week I aim to continue Visual Work and start to write Methodology and Explorations chapter of the Thesis book.
